Bowls turned on the tees lathe by master Märt Viljaste
My name is Märt Viljaste and I’m a teivas-treiping treial based in Tallinn. The teivas-treipink is an ancient tool that was used in ancient Egypt. The way it works is simple: you press the pedal, which makes the piece turn with the help of a string, and at the same time the tool removes the wood debris. Then, the paste pulls the cord back and the process repeats.
I make bowls from wet wood. After turning, the bowl dries and changes shape slightly, creating natural flowing lines. I use food-grade linseed oil, which helps the wood retain its durability and brings out the beauty and pattern of the wood.
I don’t use sandpaper to hide tool marks. The feeling of genuine craftsmanship in the bowls I make is important to me. When touching the finished product, the lines of the lathe and the special texture of the handmade product are a pleasure to feel under my hand.
People often ask why I do this when there are easier ways to make a bowl. My answer is that it honours the old methods our ancestors used. I love how simple technology can create such beautiful objects. Each bowl I turn is unique; there is no other exactly like it. Plus, it gives me the great satisfaction of creating something that others can treasure for a long time.
